Content Management Systems

Written by Chris Noble Wednesday, September 07 2011 09:47

Does your web site need a Content Management System (CMS)?  A CMS is a publishing tool that allows you to easily publish content to a web site. These tools can range from simple text edits to more complex management functions such as web page creation, site design, online reservations, ecommerce management and sales, video, and other database-based functions. The beauty of a CMS is that the publishing tools don’t require the user to know any web programming languages, including HTML. The tools are designed to make creating, managing and updating a web site fast and easy. If your needs or pages are simple, and require relatively infrequent updates, you may not need a CMS, but for a significant number of business sites, a site based on a CMS can provide a number of advantages:

Traditionally, installing, configuring and maintaining a CMS has been a chore, best left to the IT guys, but no longer.  With our Softaculous one-click application installer, you can choose from over 20 CMS tools, and an additional 10 blog applications to add to your site.  Or to BE your site - however you want it!

Client Area 101

Wednesday, September 07 2011 00:00

The Client Area is the starting point for all interaction with your One World Hosting account(s), settings, contact and billing information.  To access your own Client Area, start with https://oneworldhosting.com/support/clientarea.php - you can also log in from the footer of any page on our site.

Please note the wording on that page - your Client Area login is your email and a password which will be different from any specific control panel (or FTP) password.  If you can't find or remember it, use that Password Reset link to obtain a new password.

Once you log in you should see a page like this:

Open Support Tickets and Due Invoices are the home screen.  The most important of the top Client Area links will be "My Services".  Selecting that link will bring up a page listing your accounts, their current status and a link (red arrow below) to the "Product Details" for each account:

When you select the "Product Details" icon/link, you'll see a more detailed overview of the selected service:

Now you can log directly into your control panel (cPanel) to access all of the tools and settings for your hosted account, and also Webmail for access-anywhere email.  Below this area you'll see the current cPanel password, options to update it, and some addition package information.

Every hosting account cPanel can be accessed directly, without going through the Client Area, by simply visiting the URL yourdomain.com/cpanel, but by using the Client Area you can access everything from one point - accounts, tickets, and every other detail you need!

To order additional (Resold) accounts, open a support ticket, or for other common tasks, use the Quick Navigation links, on the right side of every Client Area page:

You can learn more about reselling in our main Reselling page.

Web Site Building 101

Monday, August 22 2011 13:40

One World Hosting offers three broad categories of server-based web site builders - tools that can help you create and manage your site pages.  We definitely support sites developed in all of the most popular site editor tools, like Dreamweaver, CoffeeCup, Coda, etc. But if you aren't ready to spend a lot of money on a piece of software, or just want to work from anywhere on your site as needed, we can help.  The categories are:

  1. File Manager tools

Every account control panel offers a tool called the File Manager which makes it very easy for you to create and edit your HTML pages in WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get). Follow the simple steps below to edit your html pages right from your hosting control panel.

    - Login to your cPanel (from your Client Area, or direct via yoursite.com/cpanel)
    - Click on File Manager
    - Go to the file you want to edit and then right click on it. Then click HTML Editor
    - HTML editor opens in your browser with which you can edit and preview and then save from the top left icon.
    - After you click save, it will be published on your website. It’s that simple!

There is also a "Code Editor" option if you want to work with code only.  Take a look at this video tutorial, also available in your control panel at the top under "Video Tutorials".

  2. RVSiteBuilder

RVSiteBuilder is a powerful template-based web site builder which is also free to every One World client.  The tool provides over 700 different professional templates from which you can choose and then build your site "from within" the application.  Not every server has RVSB by default, but it's available to every customer - if your account control panel does not have the RVSB icon, just Open a Ticket.  To learn more about RVSiteBuilder, visit Site Building with Templates: RVSiteBuilder.

  3. Softaculous site tools

Softaculous is our miracle "anything you can imagine" source for one-click installed tools for your site.  Among the tools that are often used to build entire web sites are: Wordpress, Joomla (One World Hosting is a Joomla site), phpBB, Drupal, and Dolphin, just to name a few.  Click, install and go!  To learn more, read our Softaculous page.

Bike the C-Bus

Written by Chris Monday, August 08 2011 00:00

Columbus is cool! A local organization promotes a healthy way to travel in and around the city -“Bike the C-Bus,” a bicycle tour to show off the capitol city. About 400 people have signed up already for the city wide tour.

The group set up rest stops during the 30 mile tour including Franklin Park Conservatory's community garden and the Audubon Park downtown. Ray George, “Bike The C-Bus” event coordinator say, "I'm hoping that they feel more comfortable riding in the city and see the changes going on in within the city.”

Riders will tour segments of the King Lincoln District, Woodland Park, Olde Town East, Downtown, Short North Arts District, Italian Village, Harrison West, Victorian Village, Arena District, Franklinton, Brewery District and German Village.

The entire ride will cover approximately 30 miles over four segments and featured stops that highlight change that is occurring in these neighborhoods. A portion of the proceeds are donated to local charities.

The coordinator also said the goal was to make "Bike the C-Bus" into the region's premier cycling event celebrating design, health and fitness, and urban lifestyles. "Bike the C-Bus" is considered a ride and not a race and offered a variety of course options to accommodate everyone from recreational riders to hard-core fitness enthusiasts. http://bikethecbus.com/ride/

Feeling better about feeling bad

Written by Chris Friday, August 05 2011 00:00

titleFinally a cure for "just feeling lousy"?  "Research has shown that in response to illness, animals divert all their energy to fight infection. Lethargy, fever and loss of appetite are symptoms of the body's highly organized strategy to sacrifice biological and physiological priorities to provide the greatest chance of survival." Why is this web hosting news? - well we're all human, and nobody likes that feeling of...just bleh. Check it out; not much talk of curing the cold yet, but if there's some relief for the blahs, we won't complain.  Now with bonus rat videos!

5 Simple Tips For Better Business Websites

Written by Chris Tuesday, August 02 2011 12:59

American Express recently publishing an article titled "5 Simple Tips For Better Business Websites" (http://www.openforum.com/articles/5-simple-tips-for-better-business-websites).

The tips are not unexpected, but there are ways One World Hosting can help you with each suggestion:

1. Have a mobile version. "With mobile device usage skyrocketing, a mobile-friendly website is practically essential..."  We agree!  Our GetGoMobi.com mobile site builder service can get your mobile site up and running the same day, and can automatically link from your main site - when a mobile visitor comes to your site they're instantly directed to the version that works best for them.  More than half of all web visits now are from mobile devices - make sure your customers can use your site.

2. Provide supplemental information. Would a blog help keep your site up to date?  A guestbook? A forum?  Every One World account has access to over 200 one-click installed tools to get done most any task you have.  Outdated sites are the #1 reason visitors don't come back - keep yours up to date.

3. Use AJAX for simple tasks. Along with the tool mentioned above are a wide range of task-related services; form builders, database handlers, code samples - anything you can imagine needing is at your fingertips, ready to install, and never a fee!

4. Make it easy to get help. Do you need a helpdesk or FAQ tool to manage your customer's needs?  How about one of these:

Crafty Syntax  Help Center Live  HESK    osTicket    ExoPHPDesk  phpSupport  Open Web Messenger  phpOnline  phpMyFAQ  iQDesk  Trellis Desk

5. Keep it simple and organized. If you need a site builder we have those too, and if building a site is just a bit beyond your ability or time, we can recommend designers we work with.  There are important ways to make a business site functional and effective, and we can help!

The mobile web & your site

Did you know?

Mobile users outnumber PC users, 4 to 1. Most websites won't work on a mobile phone!

Most mobile sites are slow to load, hard to view and don't offer the right kind of experiencefor on-the go customers. GoMobi makes it EASY for mobile users to get the content they're looking for!

looked unprofessional or was beyond our budget. That’s when we found the One World Hosting GoMobi service.
It has a simple, clean, almost iPhone-like presentation that is easy for customers to navigate,
yet powerful enough for us to effectively market our winery.

Adam C., Winemaker - papermoon.mobi

"I just wanted to share that I'm VERY impressed with your service and extremely pleased my new mobi web site.
I do know how to design websites but honestly ... I really didn't feel like "fiddling" with the time consuming learning curves
in addition to trying to figure out how to add those neat gadgets your service includes. AMAZING! :)"

Thanks for making my life easier!

A new site for OWH

Last Updated on Monday, August 08 2011 14:11 Written by Chris Friday, July 22 2011 00:00

The One World Hosting web site is all new - new pages, and most importantly, new and more convenient integration with the client backend tools that you need.  We've taken advantage of one of the many great tools available to every OWH client - a one-click installed application on which the new site is based: Joomla.  Joomla is a CMS or Content Management System, and as such it provides a handy interface to separate content from presentation so that you can develop a look & feel, and then add, modify and delete pages ("Articles") as needed without all of the html styling (and complication).

One of the features you'll notice right away is the easy communication between every page in our site, from descriptive pages to support and then directing into your own Client Area where you can manage your own accounts.

The functionality also gives us considerably more flexibility to keep the site up to the minute current, whether it's a new support technique, a new version of a favorite tool, or even a simple service announcement.

If you'd like to learn more about Joomla or another CMS, check in your account control panel for the "Softaculous" icon - that's the main interface from which you can browse from over 200 individual tools that you can install with a single click.
