OWH,

By the way, I have to make a comment. We moved to OneWorldHosting back in May from another vendor. I have never been sorry for that decision. OWH has simply been the most reliable and responsive host I've ever seen. Response to my technical questions has always been exceptionally good. Thanks for the follow up.

Domain Names Expired Domain Names

Sometimes domain names "expire" - they are not renewed prior to the registration renewal date. For domain names we register, we send out a series of 4 renewal notifications, but if the owner can no longer receive mail at the listed address, or did not respond to the reminders, the domain name can expire.

Because of new rules from ICANN - the guiding body behind the domain name process, the procedures and costs related to expired domain names have changed. The curernt stages in the life of an expired domain name are listed below:

Domain Name Registration A domain name may be registered for up to a ten year period, but most new domain names are registered for one to two years.  The normal expiration date is exactly 365 days from the registration date (for 1 year, etc.)

Domain Name Expiration Date

Shortly after the domain name goes past its expiration date the domain name will be deactivated.  All domain services including the web page and email will no longer work.  The domain may be renewed during this period, but it will take 24-72 hours before the domain services will re-activate.
Domain Name Grace Period For approximately 30 days the domain name will be in a "grace period".  During this time the domain name will not be active but may be renewed by paying standard renewal fees.
Domain Name Redemption Period

At the end of the Grace Period the domain will enter a 30 day Redemption Period.  Whois information (name, address, telephone numbers, etc.) will be deleted.  The domain will still be inactive.  The domain may be renewed by the original owner (only) for $150.00.  It is a manual process for the registry to add the name/address information back into the domain registry records, therefore, the process may take several days.

Domain Name Deletion

Five days after the end of the redemption period the domain name will be deleted from the registry and will be made available for anyone to register.
Although a domain name will not function after the expiration date you may still renew your domain name for up to 70 days.  Please be aware that there are significant fees to renew the domain name after the grace period and during the Redemption Period.

Additional information concerning the Redemption Period can by found at the ICANN web site.
