IMPORTANT 1 – EMAIL CHANGE:
Your web site and configurations are running normally and without interruption. For email you MUST make two critical changes to your email setup on your computer. Those settings are pictured in simple screenshots here: http://zaphost.com/zap-hosting-support/email-updates.html

IMPORTANT 2 – USERNAME CHANGE:
If your username contains a hyphen “-“ or an underscore “_”, then those characters have been removed – they don’t work in the new system. So if your username was “my-name”, then it is now “myname”. This is for your client records, control panel and FTP access.

1. Account Owner and Billing details:
The account owner, billing details and payment history are now available though our Client Portal, at http://newworldhosting.com/index.php. Once you log into with your existing account username and password you can view:

• Owner and payment details
• Hosting account and domain name details (+ a direct link to control panel login)
• Open and archived Support Tickets
• and much more

2. Account Control Panel and tools:
To login to your new cPanel you can connect via your client portal as noted above, or go directly via this URL format: http://mydomain.com/cpanel

We have seen a number of recent incidences where hackers have accessed added FTP user accounts and uploaded bad files.  In nearly every case, the reason for the breach was a weak password.  To address this problem, we are introducing a new password policy for added FTP users. The new policy requires a password to include at least one lowercase letter (a-z), one uppercase letter (A-Z), and one number (0-9) and must be between 8-10 characters long.  This is a standard password convention used by many organizations to protect their content and systems.

Please change your added FTP user password(s) before 17th Feb, 2009. Because of the risk involved, we will be scanning passwords for all added FTP users and change the passwords where they do not comply with this policy. To securely view the updated password simply log into your account control panel and select the FTP Manager icon.

Just to clarify, this does not affect your main account password for the control panel and main FTP access – only for added FTP users.  Of course, if your control panel password is simple, this convention is also highly recommended there, for your protection.

::: Security 1: better passwords

If your web site or mailbox has a simple password, you are at risk.  The best passwords have a combination of letters (both upper and lower case) and numbers.  It’s also best to have a separate password for every online service you use.  If your password is easy to crack, someone probably will.  Update it today and protect your investment.

::: Security 2: good security habits

1. Make sure that all scripts or applications which you have uploaded to your site are secure.  If a script is even a few months old, it’s worth checking for a new version; patches come out frequently.  If in doubt, search this site for vulnerabilities: http://www.securityfocus.com.

2. If you are uploading and using scripts, avoid the use of “wide open” or “777″ permissions where anyone can read, write, and execute your script.

3.  Monitor your account.  Your control panel offers a range of tools to help you monitor your account use, traffic, and files.  Keep an eye out for suspicious files or directories, or mysterious traffic spikes.  If you’re unsure, don’t delete – ask us!

IMPORTANT NOTE:
If your site is hacked, our immediate response will be to lock it down. We’ll investigate the problem, and then contact you with our findings. Sites hacked multiple times can be subject to removal.  Be safe!
